Why aerodynamics matter in cycling 

We’ve heard it over and over again: ‘aero is everything’. So why is being aerodynamic so important for cyclists and triathletes? When you ride a bike, one of the biggest factors that slows you down is air resistance - and overcoming that air resistance makes up a significant proportion of the energy you expend to make forward progress.

The faster you ride, the more air resistance you have to overcome. Which is why reducing aerodynamic drag in cycling is so important. Because if you’re not thinking about cycling and triathlon aerodynamics, you’re leaving some serious performance out on the race course.

What is aerodynamic drag in cycling? 

As we cycle, we have to overcome two things to move forward: friction from the drivetrain and rolling resistance on the road, and aerodynamic drag.

Aerodynamic drag in cycling is a mechanical force generated as you and your bike move through the air. It’s generated by a difference in velocity, and it acts in opposition to the direction of travel - so it slows you down. In simple terms, when you cycle you have to ‘push’ air molecules out of the way to make forward progress. Drag is created by variations in pressure as you move through the air, and by friction as air molecules have to move around you and your bike.

The larger the surface area presented to the wind, the more drag is created. Imagine you’re cycling into a headwind. If you sit bolt upright it’s instantly going to feel like you’ve got to work harder to hold the same pace. Whereas if you get down onto your drops or aero bars, it’s going to feel easier. This is why in cycling, ensuring your bike, your riding position and even your clothing are as streamlined as possible is so important. Improving your aerodynamics reduces the amount of air molecules you have to ‘push’ out of the way and therefore the amount of drag you have to overcome.

Aerodynamic drag increases at higher speeds

The reason cycling aerodynamics are so crucial in the pro peloton and in professional triathlon is that aerodynamic drag actually increases at higher speeds. At slower cycling speeds, most of your power output goes into overcoming the resistance created by your drivetrain and road rolling resistance. But as your speed increases, a larger and larger proportion of your power output goes into overcoming drag. The faster you ride, the more aerodynamic drag is created and so ensuring your bike and your riding position are as aero as possible becomes increasingly more important.

Why rider position matters more than your bike

Optimise your riding position

Getting yourself into an aerodynamic cycling position is going to make a huge difference when it comes to reducing drag. Your aero position needs to be comfortable enough that you can actually sustain it for the duration of your ride or race. An ultra-aggressive aero cycling position that you can only hold for 5 minutes isn’t going to be much use when you’ve got a 180km ride to get through in a triathlon and you end up sitting bolt upright for most of it.

This is why you’ll find that the pros spend countless hours testing out different positions to find that sweet spot and get into a riding position which is as aerodynamic as possible without being so uncomfortable that they can’t sustain it - or in triathlon, that they can’t run well off the bike.

Why your race kit, your helmet and other bike gear matters for aerodynamics 

Once you’ve got your aero cycling position dialled, it’s also important to think about the finer details such as your apparel, your helmet, wheel set and bike components.

Cycling kit and tri suits

While body position is a key factor, it’s important to choose a cycling kit/a tri suit which isn’t going to create any unnecessary drag. Ensure your gear fits close to your body (with enough stretch that you can still comfortably get into your riding position) so excess fabric isn’t going to act like a sail in the wind.  

There’s been a significant amount of research and development into optimising cycling and triathlon apparel for aerodynamics in recent years. You can now find jerseys and race suits which feature textured material across the shoulders and sleeves, designed to create a boundary layer of air close to your body to help air flow more smoothly around you and reduce friction drag. 

Aero cycling helmets 

Another consideration for triathlon and cycling aerodynamics is your helmet. Your head is one of the main contributors to drag (which is why head position matters) so if getting more aerodynamic on the bike is a priority, you need to choose a helmet designed to reduce drag. 

Helmets with fewer vents (such as aero road helmets) reduce turbulence by creating a smoother surface. And full-time trial helmets are also designed to offer a streamlined shape which guides airs more smoothly around your head. It’s important to note that while aero cycling helmets are faster, you do have to compromise on cooling so ensure you’ve tested out your helmet in warm conditions if it’s likely to be hot on race day.  

Do deep rim wheels make a difference to cycling aerodynamics?

The frame geometry on aero road bikes and time trial/triathlon bikes is designed to be as streamlined and efficient as possible. But upgrading to an aero wheel set can make a fast bike, even faster. Deep rim aero wheels help the air to pass more smoothly from the tyre to the rim as you ride, reducing turbulence and pressure wake. In cross winds, the wider surface area also enables the wind to ‘push’ the wheel forward - a little like how a sail helps a boat to move forward.

Common aerodynamic mistakes to avoid

Reducing aerodynamic drag in cycling opens up a whole world of marginal gains, and it’s easy to get swept up in all the tiny details as you try to get more aerodynamic on the bike. But there are a few basic errors it’s all too easy to make in the pursuit of a better CdA.

  • Setting an aero riding position which is too aggressive to be sustainable. It might be the fastest position on paper, but if your position is so aggressive that you can’t actually hold it for the duration of your race, it’s useless. Match your riding position to your current flexibility, and test it in real world conditions to make sure it’s sustainable.
  • Compromising power output in favour of aerodynamics. There’s a balancing act between the most aero position, and a position that still allows you to push good power. Super low positions which close your hip angle may reduce the amount of force you can drive through the pedals, so find your sweet spot and give yourself plenty of time to train in your aero position to develop position-specific muscular strength and endurance.
  • For triathletes: forgetting you’ve still got to run off the bike. Cyclists competing in time trials can get away with an aero cycling position which has them walking like a T-Rex for several hours afterwards. But triathletes - you’ve got to jump straight off the bike and start running. So make sure your aero position doesn’t scrunch you up so much you can’t get upright and get moving.
  • Not thinking about your head position. Lifting your head too much creates drag, so it’s important to stay focused and keep your head low while you ride. If you’re wearing an aero helmet with a longer ‘tail’, looking down (i.e. at your bike computer) too much also means the back of your helmet sticks up and disrupts air flow. Ideally, you want to keep your head low and tucked between your shoulders (think ‘turtle’) while still maintaining good visibility of the road ahead.

Road bike vs triathlon bike aerodynamics: What’s the difference?
